Selectmen's Minutes July 16, 1996
July 10, 1996


Present:  Catherine Kuchinski, Charles Flynn, Judith Murdoch

Vice Chairman Kuchinski opened meeting at 7:30 p.m. and announced that the meeting was called in order to accept the resignation of Chief Eugene Berry.  The Chairman read the resignation letter from Chief Berry into the minutes.  

"It is with deep personal regret that I must inform you that I will be resigning my position as Chief of Police of the Hanson Police Department, effective August 10, 1996, because of increasing family financial responsibilities.

"I would like to thank this Board of Selectmen and the two previous boards I have been fortunate to work with, for all their support and guidance during the past four years.

"The Board of Selectmen gave me a mission and guidance and allowed me to pursue excellence in achieving those goals.

"I would like to thank the members of all the other boards with whom I interacted for the opportunity to engage in true political democracy.  

"To the citizens of Hanson, I say thank you for the privilege of serving you.

"To all the members of the Police Department, it has been a distinct honor in working with each one of you.  You are all true professionals.

"Respectfully,  E. G. Berry, Chief of Police"

Several comments were made by Board members concerning their regret of Chief Berry's decision to resign.  Chief Berry commented about his mixed emotions on leaving the Town of Hanson.  Motion by Mrs. Murdoch, 2nd by Charles Flynn to accept Chief Berry's letter of resignation with deep regret and thanks.  Voted 3-0.

The Board discussed placing the Chief on the agenda for 7/16 in order to inform the public of his resignation before the Cable.  

Motion to adjourn by Judy Murdoch, 2nd Charles Flynn, 3-0 vote.


Note:  Members agreed that instead of the 16th, it would be more appropriate to have the Chief in on the 30th of July before a full Board.
